Victoria’s National Heritage listed Great Ocean Road is a 243 kilometre (151 mi) stretch of scenic road that runs along Australia’s southeastern coast between Torquay and Allansford. The historical significance of the road is attributed to the fact that it was hand-built by returned soldiers in honour of their fallen comrades, who died during WWI. Built between 1919 and 1932, the Great Ocean Road is considered the world’s biggest war memorial and has become a very popular tourist attraction.

Visitors to the Great Ocean Road have access to a huge number of amazing landmarks and welcoming villages, full of family-friendly attractions. The scenery along the way changes from sweeping surf beaches and rugged coastline, to stunning rainforests and majestic mountain ranges, making the journey a perfect ‘sampler’ for those wishing to take in all that Victoria has to offer. Natural limestone and sandstone attractions – such as the Twelve Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge, the
‘London Bridge’ Arch (which has ironically fallen down in recent years, but is still spectacular) and the Grotto – mesmerise visitors and make a perfect backdrop for some outstanding photography.

Many popular towns and beaches along the way – such as Bells Beach, Apollo Bay, Lorne, Anglesea and Port Campbell – offer a number of activities ranging from relaxing coffee houses on the beachfront to surfing opportunities, swimming, kayaking, fishing, parks, gardens and lookouts. The Otway National Park is full of gorgeous natural wonders, and the area is bursting with wildlife spotting opportunities from Southern Right Whales in Warrnambool to koalas, kangaroos and emus at Tower Hill State Game Reserve, koalas at Kennett River, fur seals at Cape Bridgewater and dolphins at Queenscliff on the Bellarine Peninsula.
