The infamous sandstone rock formation known as Uluru (Ayers Rock) is one of Australia’s most popular destinations for locals and visitors alike. This ancient and sacred site is located 335 kilometres (208 mi) southwest of Alice Springs, but the area itself has its own resort, offering accommodation and amenities to those making the effort to visit this amazing landmark. Uluru is part of the Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park. Obviously, Uluru – along with Kata Tjuta (AKA the Olgas) – are the two primary features of the area; however, there are also a number of waterholes, springs, rock caves and ancient Indigenous paintings within the park, meaning there’s plenty to see and do in this amazing desert landscape.

There’s nothing quite as beautiful as a sunrise or sunset over Uluru and the flat desert plains that surround it, so there are a variety of options available for viewing this. Besides viewing platforms, you can experience the ochre and golden glow of the sun over Uluru from a helicopter or a hot air balloon. You can also explore the mighty rock via a guided tour with an Indigenous guide, learning of the legends, traditions and history of the original owners and their Dreamtime. You can even traverse the scenic wonderland on the back of a Harley Davidson motorcycle or a camel!

NOTE: It is permissible to climb Uluru; however, the traditional owners ask visitors to refrain from doing so as it holds significant spiritual importance to them.
